How the calculator works
The calculator adds four things your family would need covered, then subtracts what you already have.
- Income: your annual income multiplied by the number of years your family would need it replaced.
- Debt: loans and credit cards other than your home loan.
- Home loan: the remaining balance, so the family is not forced to sell.
- Education: future school and university costs for your children, in today’s ringgit.
From the total it subtracts your existing insurance or Takaful coverage and any savings you could use right away, for example part of your EPF. For a longer explanation, read How Much Life Insurance or Takaful Coverage Do You Need?
What this number does not include
- It assumes you want to replace your income and clear your debts in full. If your household could manage on less, treat the result as a ceiling.
- It does not account for inflation, investment returns, tax, or a working spouse’s income.
- It does not tell you which product to buy. Insurance and Takaful use the same calculation. Only the way the coverage is structured is different.
Frequently asked questions
How many years of income should I use?
Ten years is a common starting point. A household with young children usually needs more. A household close to retirement usually needs less.
Should I include my EPF savings?
Only the part your family could realistically use. Retirement money you do not plan to touch should stay out of the figure.
Is this the same for Takaful?
Yes. The amount of coverage is worked out the same way. The difference is in how the plan is structured and funded.
